Pastor: Rev. Dr. Gregory Coates
Pastor Greg was born in Lexington, Kentucky but did most of his growing up in Springfield, IL. He grew up as the son of a Free Methodist pastor and is actually a sixth-generation Methodist pastor, a legacy dating back to 1864. He is a graduate of Greenville College (now University) in south-central Illinois, of Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky, of Duke Divinity School in North Carolina, and of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston. Pastor Greg also served as the senior pastor of the First Free Methodist Church in Indianapolis from 2008-2012. While there, he was instrumental in launching a para-church ministry called LYN House (which stands for "Love Your Neighbor"), a safe place designed for at-risk teens to learn and develop academically. As an academic, Pastor Greg has published a book entitled "Politics Strangely Warmed: Political Theology in the Wesleyan Spirit," has been published in numerous journals such as the Wesleyan Theological Journal, and is currently working on the manuscript of a second book about Methodism and slavery.
But setting aside the academic credentials, Pastor Greg is first and foremost a disciple of Jesus Christ. He loves to help others take the next step in their faith journey, whether they are a child or a centenarian. Pastor Greg is also a family man who loves to dote on his two daughters as well as his miniature golden doodle named Charlie. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, walking his dog, reading, and watching movies.
